Air Flow Sensors

Air flow sensors measure how much air is moving through heating and cooling systems. These sensors help HVAC systems know if there is proper air flow by reporting back to control boards. This allows the system to adjust the fan or blower motor speed and maintain the target temperature, ventilation and air distribution....Read more

Air velocity sensors or duct air flow sensors are critical in preventing HVAC components from freezing or overheating. Air flow sensors are often part of the safety check process in an HVAC system. A failing sensor can cause fault codes which can shut down the system. When a sensor isn’t working properly, heat exchangers, coils, compressors may be forced to work harder, which can cause premature wear and shorten the lifespan of the equipment.

They also help with air quality control. If sensors fail, a red flag might be poor air circulation and uneven or inaccurate temperature or airflow feedback. It can also present as increased humidity or stale air.

Including air flow sensors as part of the preventative maintenance is important to keeping HVAC systems running efficiently. Sensors should be checked along with ductwork looking for dust or corrosion. Sensors should be cleaned using compressed air to remove dust that has collected. Calibration of sensors should be done as recommended by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
