Limit Controls
Limit controls are safety instruments used in HVAC systems to regulate and monitor temperature setpoints. They are used in commercial HVAC units such as air handlers, furnaces and boilers. Limit controls interrupt power to the burner or heating element by sensing excessive heat....Read more
They are vital to HVAC systems by preventing equipment malfunction, fire threats, and system failure because of overheating. Proactive maintenance is instrumental in malfunction prevention. Limit controls breakdown can cause cracked heat exchangers, overheating or system shutdown. If the system keeps operating beyond safe temperature limits, the HVAC system may not shut down automatically if the limit controls aren’t able to detect unsafe temperatures. Blower motors can also become damaged if limit controls don’t activate the blower leading to excessive heat buildup.
Limit controls need to be inspected on a regular basis often during scheduled maintenance, system upgrades, or investigating heating issues. Regular maintenance should include a visual inspection of the limit controls looking for burn marks, corrosion, any type of physical wear and tear. It should also include testing high-temperature conditions to ensure the limit switch trips at the proper setpoint.
