Timers can fail or malfunction. This can cause inconsistent cycling and temperatures. Failure can also cause other HVAC equipment to lockout of the system to completely shut down.

As with most components of HVAC systems, including timers in scheduled maintenance is necessary. Visually inspecting timers is a good first step. Check for corrosion or burn marks and look to make sure the timer housing is intact and has no debris. A multimeter should be used to ensure electricity is flowing through the time when it is on. The timer’s wires should be checked to make sure there are no kinks or breaks.
